Brief biographical account of the life of John Caldwell Guilds, centering on the years 1956 to 1964. During this period Carlock and Guilds served together on the English faculty at Texas Tech University (then Texas Technological University). The account contains personal reminiscences of Guilds' role in the in the English Department, and the improvements and changes he made, in particular in the study of American literature.
